Capture:
After Collison's murder,Starkweather and Fugate tried to steal his car so they could abandon the Packard they had stolen from previous victims(the Wards),but Starkweather didn't know how to release the emergency brake.A man asked them if they needed help, but Starkweather pulled a gun on him.The man struggled with Starkweather;a Deputy Sheriff(William Romer)spotted the struggle as he drove by,and stopped-at this point,Fugate fled from the car,and yelled to Romer that Starkweather had killed a man.Starkweather fled back to the Packard and drove off.Romer pursued Starkweather while dispatching the chase in.Two officers on duty(Earl Heflin & Robert Ainslie)overheard the dispatch just as Starkweather passed in front of them-they joined the pursuit.Heflin then shot out the back windshield, injuring Starkweather(the injury was very minor, being of a cut behind his ear).Starkweather stopped and surrendered.
Aftershock:
-both were only charged with the murder of Jensen, due to prosecutor Elmer Scheele, who believed there was only enough physical evidence to prove they commited that one, than the other murders-
Since a majority of the murders took place in Nebraska and only one in Wyoming-Starkweather was given the choice of where to be tried,he chose Nebraska. When Starkweather's trial started on May 5,1958,his lawyers entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity-this being against Starkweather's wishes, who wanted to plead guilty.During the course of the trial,Starkweather denied his early claims that Fugate had nothing to do with the murders, and now stated that she was responsible for several of the murders and all the mutilations. In less than 24-hours,Starkweather was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to death. In all,Starkweather had four stays of executions(12/17/58,3/4/59,6/6/59,and 6/23/59),but on June 25,1959-Starkweather's death sentence was carried out by the electric chair. He is buried in Wyuka cemetary in Lincoln,Nebraska.
